Obviously, the current labor market is an employer’s market. Companies can select from arguably the largest candidate pool in history. Discouraged job seekers often complain that the disparity in numbers contributes to an atmosphere of employer arrogance. Their advantage of supply over demand has lead to a lack of common courtesy regarding keeping candidates informed, returning calls, etc. While this perception certainly has merit, it’s important for job seekers to realize that the key individual at a company with an opening may not perceive him or herself as holding all the trump cards. That’s the hiring manager.

In most scenarios, these uncertain economic times means that this opening has existed significantly longer than the hiring manager would have liked. The extended delay increases the probability that what started as a need has quickly escalated to the problem or crisis level, most of which has fallen on the desk of the hiring manager. This crisis presents a candidate with their best opportunity to get hired. A hiring manager facing a laundry list of problems will be drawn to the candidate most capable of solving these problems.

Once you’re scheduled to interview with a hiring manager, prepare by learning as much information as possible regarding the backlogs and difficulties this opening has created. This is where your network becomes critical. Think of anyone you know with knowledge of the company and the hiring manager. LinkedIn can provide connecting points from your network to the company. Once you identify them, use these contacts to get an idea of what the biggest need facing company and hiring manager is. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Once you have a better idea what the problems are, you can better emphasize the skills, successes and projects from your background that will best demonstrate your ability to solve them.

One of the most consistent mistakes I see job seekers make is failing to view the hiring situation through the eyes of the employer. Rather than perceiving a hiring manager as a the one with all the power, realize this is an individual with a need. You can much better offer yourself as a solution by knowing what exactly the need is.

The 5th Annual Intel + UC Berkeley Technology Entreprenuership Challenge concluded tonight with "Ihealth" from Tsinghau University, China winning both the First Prize award of $25k and the People's Choice Award. Second and third prize were respectively CaptchaAd and Zimplistic. The IBTEC Challenge is a business plan competition focused at combining technology and business development. Technology encompassed in the competition included everything from saving the rainforest through social networking, medical diagnostics for TB, DNA transfer at room temperature,

Ihealth tackled the problem of creating a better bone screw for addressing fractures in load bearing bones/limbs. Current common practice utilizes metal screws which provide the strength for supporting load bearing bones - but must be operated on to remove them after the bone has healed. Alternatively there are bones screws that are biodegradable and the body will eventually reabsorb them but they are not suitable for the "big bones" (load bearing) and create acidic response that can cause inflamation. Now this may have been a rather clinical explanation of the problem - but the team highlighted their new invention which allowed physicians to utilize new biodegradable bones screws which provide the strength to support the big bone breaks and still be reabsorbed by the body without side effect. The team engaged the audience by reviewing the Houston Rockets center Yao Ming's fractures for roughly the last 5 years - proving that he would have been able to return more quickly to the game - saving Houston millions from the lost revenue generated by winning games. A fun twist on the benefits

Second Prize was CatchaAd put forward by Germany's TU Munich University. How often have you been presented with distorted words/letters/symbols to prove you are you and not a machine asking for access to a new website or account. It has been proven that these security guards can now be easily breached by "smart" programs - defeating their original purpose. CatchaAd replaces the words with video - being able to drop a picture in that the user can identify - the key is that that graphic can be an add or message that can link to other mediums. A simple concept that prduces security a computer can't immediatly hack and give advertisers extra eyes.

Zimplistic's "Rotimatic" rounded out the top prize at Third Place. The "Rotimatic" produces the Indian meal "Roti" at the push of the button. Roti's are similar to the traditional bread or rice dishes with meal and are a staple to most Indian meals. Based at the National University of Singapore, Zimplistic's invention free's the homemaker from 30minute plus preparing Roti's for the meals. What was great about this idea was its simplicity - it reminded you of the microwave concept 30 years ago - which reduces the time in meal preperation while retaining good food value. What could you do if at the push of the button - you were given 30 minutes to an hour back a day. Consider the possibilities.

	There were just the top prizes - but were a fun start to consider - what would you create - given your best use of technology idea - and a little bit of money.;}

Larry Brown, the coach who had the most success with Allen Iverson, did a radio interview recently in which he touched on the Iverson situation. (Found via True Hoop .)

	A choice excerpt:

ON IF HE THINKS AI'S UNWILLINGNESS TO PLAY A SUPPORTING ROLE IS HURTING HIS CHANCES OF FINDING A TEAM THAT WILL BE A GOOD FIT FOR HIM:

"I think so, but he doesn't think he needs to. Here's what happened - when he thought about coming with me he said coach I don't care if I start, you just give me an opportunity to start. And I said that's fair. I hope I do that with all my players. But I told him that if he came with me, I have two guards sitting there and they would be unhappy, and I didn't think that was fair. So when the Memphis situation came up, I looked at their roster. One, he made more money with them which I thought was a factor. And two, they just had Conley and Mayo and he was under the opinion that he would get a chance to start. Well, he missed all of training camp and I think that hurt. And then he was a little impatient. But the real factor was his family wasn't with him. His family's in Atlanta and I think they didn't want to move to Memphis. And I think that was the major reason he wanted to leave."

On November 13th in Puerto Rico, 19-year-old Jorge Steven Lopez was brutally murdered -- decapitated, dismembered, and partially burnt -- by a suspect claiming a trans-panic defense.

 Jorge Steven Lopez

The accused killer 26-year-old Martinez Matos told a Puerto Rican newspaper that he saw Lopez wearing a blue dress and boots. Thinking Lopez was female, Matos allegedly let Lopez into his car. Upon learning that Lopez was biologically male, the suspect alleges that he "had a flashback to when he was raped in prison" and proceeded to attack Lopez.

Lopez is the most recent victim of trans-phobic violence. His death and untold numbers of others will be remembered at annual Transgender Day of Remembrance celebrations across the country this weekend.

In Memphis, a ceremony will be held on Friday, Nov. 20th at Neshoba Unitarian Universalist Church at 7350 Raleigh Lagrange Rd. at 6 p.m.

At Thanksgiving dinner next week your parents and other relatives are bound to ask, "How's that job search coming along?"

While some young people fear this question, I encourage you to embrace it. Why not use your family's interest as an opportunity? If you're comfortable asking your loved ones for help, there are several ways you can enlist their support -- appropriately -- in your job search efforts.

Here are three examples of how your mom, dad and other family members can lend a hand in your job hunt. Listen to these and other tips in my new podcast .

	1. PROOFREADING. You can never have too many people checking your resume, cover letters, grad school applications, social networking profiles and any other professional content you've created. If your parents have good grammar and spelling abilities, ask them to check some of your career-related writing and to make sure your online image is ready for prime time.

	2. REHEARSING FOR INTERVIEWS. Your parents or relatives (particularly anyone you know who has experience interviewing job seekers) can help you prepare for any upcoming interviews by running through questions, helping to choose an appropriate interview outfit or videotaping your answers.

	3. MAKING NETWORKING CONNECTIONS. Your family members definitely count as part of your professional network. Ask everyone at the Thanksgiving table if they’d be willing to brainstorm any of their contacts who might be helpful for you. You’d be amazed at how many people come to mind when they really think about it.

Some people aren’t comfortable asking their parents for help and connections—it’s fine if you feel this way, and of course there are lots of other connections you can access. But if you are comfortable networking with your family, then I hope you'll spend some time talking about your job search while you're gobbling down your turkey.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced today that it would invest $335 million to support effective teaching, including $90 million to Memphis City Schools for its Teacher Effectiveness Initiative (TEI).

"We are convinced that in order to dramatically improve education in America, we must first ensure that every student has an effective teacher in every subject, every school year," Melinda Gates said. "These communities have shown extraordinary commitment to tackling one of the most important education issues of our time."

To read specifics about what MCS plans to do with the funding -- to be awarded over six years -- here is an earlier blog post .

The announcement of the grants culminated a yearlong application process. Other funding was awarded to Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida, Pittsburgh Public Schools, and a coalition of charter school management organizations in Los Angeles.

	By Matt Meyers

A few months ago, I was faced with an interesting situation: I had a shiny new MBA from MIT Sloan and a job offer from McKinsey, but my start date wasn’t until January. These unusual circumstances presented a unique opportunity to pursue a personal goal of using my business background to achieve tangible environmental results.

Long an admirer of EDF’s practical approach to solving problems through corporate partnerships, I jumped at the chance to take on an externship with the Green Portfolio Project team as they worked to replicate the early success of their partnership with KKR.

As EDF and KKR’s Green Portfolio Project has proven, sound environmental management can provide a substantial source of value creation for private equity firms and their portfolio companies. So far, that project has focused on identifying and implementing environmental initiatives at companies PE firms already own.

However, by considering environmental management during the due diligence process, private equity firms could identify similar cost saving opportunities in the companies they are looking to buy. The current focus of environmental due diligence is aimed primarily at risk mitigation. By considering environmental initiatives early on in the process, a PE firm might be able to identify a few million dollars in operational savings, which could influence bid prices.

For example, if the PE firm recognized an opportunity for a fleet efficiency project, the resulting decrease in operational expenses would lead to an increase in cash flow, allowing the PE firm to pay down debt more quickly and realize a higher sales price upon exit. Once the deal is consummated, the private equity firm could add the environmental cost saving projects identified during the due diligence process to the hundred-day operational improvement plan.

By looking at environmental management as a way to add value, not just mitigate risk, PE firms can improve their due diligence process and deliver better returns to their investors.

This week, in our print product, Chris Davis reported on a recent Memphis Heritage meeting about plans for future development in Overton Square. (You can read that story here .)

The assembled crowd wasn't too happy with the plan to demolish the buildings on the south side of Madison at Cooper. The plans for the property also include a new grocery store, but some community members are concerned no matter how well-intentioned the developers that a discount grocery store will open there.

Now SquareTalk.org is asking community members for input on what businesses "old or new" they'd like to see be part of the new Overton Square. The Memphis Regional Design Center will then forward those responses on to the developers.

So far, the sole response calls for a Whole Foods or a Trader Joe's.

The developers plan to submit their plans to the Office of Planning and Development in early December.

You can also see the results of the regional design center's earlier Overton Square survey here . A majority of the web respondents wanted to see a combination of preserving and demolishing the buildings on the south side of Madison. Almost 70 percent said they wanted to see a grocery store in the area.

Are you someone who typically never thought about temporary work as a viable career option ? You may want to reconsider. A recent article by the WSJ highlights the attractiveness of temporary work and how it is very viable career option.

	The article states:

"Staffing firms say employers are turning to temporary help in lieu of regular hires until they can be certain that a more permanent investment will pay off. Demand is strongest in technology, tax accounting, compliance and customer service."

Anyone currently on a temporary assignment hoping for a staff position in the long-term? Do you have any advice for other MyPath members?

I'm so confused. If the fiery pangs of eternal damnation are -- as French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre suggested -- a metaphor for "other people," why on earth would the North American Sartre Society hold a conference bringing people together, thus creating hell? Could it be a masochistic urge to bathe in a river of reflective consciousness? Or is the lure of a jug-wine and cheese-cube mixer so great that even academics who should know better will risk their lives by

British import An Education's title is a double entendre referencing two very different types of instruction that the film's 16-year-old heroine finds herself choosing between: the education she receives in her all-girls school as she grinds her way toward Oxford and the one she receives on the arm of an older man, who whisks her to art auctions, jazz clubs, and gay Paris. Set in early-'60s suburban London, a place just beginning to swing, An Education presents a few crucial

Now, new campaigns are dialing in on cell phone use. In 1982, as a young, ambitious Memphis lawyer getting his feet wet in politics, Jim Kyle managed the upstart but unsuccessful campaign of fellow Shelby Countian Harold Byrd in a hard-fought Democratic primary race for Congress in Tennessee's 7th District. A year later, having won a special election for a state Senate seat on his second try, Kyle found himself assigned to a Nashville office suite whose occupants included veteran legislator Annabelle Clement O'Brien of Crossville. O'Brien was the sister

Although it may be difficult to tell by looking at Union Avenue, Midtown residents and business owners have a long history of fighting over development. The latest skirmish happened last week at a public meeting convened by Memphis Heritage to discuss the seemingly unavoidable demolition of buildings in Overton Square. The crowd filled the main room of Memphis Heritage's Madison Avenue headquarters to capacity November 12th, with an overflow of people spilling out into the foyer and adjoining rooms. "Demolition

Dan Auerbach is halfway through his winter tour, sitting in a diner in Baltimore, Maryland. He's got a fever -- nothing as extreme as H1N1 or as ridiculous as the boogie-woogie flu, but an annoying low-grade illness that's got him doped up on Advil's over-the-counter flu remedy and a host of nasal decongestants. "Right now, I'm getting to be lazy, which is both a good and bad thing," Auerbach croaks by phone from this tour stop. "I'm trying to feel

There has been much discussion lately in journalism circles about the pros and cons of allowing anonymous comments on newspaper websites. Proponents for eliminating anonymity say it will improve the level of civic discourse, because people are much less likely to post libelous, obscene, or irresponsible statements if they have to use their real names. That's probably true. "Muskrat" is much less likely to call "Boogerhead" a "stupid, racist, dillweed" if he has to post under his real name of

Ever since he turned pro in 1995, Memphis golfer Doug Barron hoped
to make a name for himself. This month he did, as the first person
suspended under the PGA Tour's anti-doping rules.

Last week, attorneys for Barron and the PGA argued his case in
federal court in Memphis for more than three hours. On Monday, U.S.
magistrate Tu Pham denied Barron's request for a temporary restraining
order that would have allowed him to compete this week in a qualifying
tournament in Houston.

	Strict liability strikes again.

"You are strictly liable whenever a prohibited substance is in your
body," says the first page of the PGA's anti-doping manual.

Although Barron said he took testosterone and a beta-blocker drug
for several years under a doctor's care for treatment of a medical
condition, the PGA Tour refused to give him a "therapeutic use
exemption" (TUE), and Pham declined to give him a mulligan. Barron is
the second Memphis athlete to make ESPN this year for alleged cheating.
The first, of course, was former University of Memphis basketball star
Derrick Rose, whose bogus SAT test cost the Tigers their 2007-2008
victories. (The university has appealed the NCAA's ruling.)

By ordinary standards, Barron, 40 years old, is an excellent golfer.
By PGA standards, he is a journeyman battling to qualify for a tour
card in the PGA's pressure-packed "Q-School." In June he got a break: a
sponsor's exemption into the St. Jude Classic. He played two rounds,
shooting 9-over-par 149 and failing to make the cut but not before he
was drug tested. Barron did not dispute the positive test results and
admitted to continued use of testosterone and propranolol. After again
reviewing his medical records, the PGA Tour suspended him for one
year.

With that, the relatively unknown Barron joined fellow athletes such
as track star Marion Jones, cyclist Floyd Landis, and baseball player
Manny Ramirez, all of whom were penalized for illegal drug use.
Attorney Jeff Rosenblum argued that Barron is "disabled" under the
Americans With Disabilities Act, because low testosterone levels
"impair a major life activity," namely intimacy with his wife. The
beta-blocker, he said, was for treatment of a racing heart, and
Barron's doctor was trying to wean him off of it.

"This is an outrageous penalty when you compare it to baseball or
football," Rosenblum said.

Not so, said Rich Young, the PGA Tour's lawyer. The rules are the
rules, and Barron signed off on them and broke them.

"This isn't fun or easy for anybody, but it's the right thing for a
sport to do," Young said.

The drugs are banned because they're performance enhancers that
increase strength, speed recovery, and calm nerves. Young described a
situation where a golfer needs to make up one stroke on the 18th hole
and can either play it safe or go for the green on his second shot to
get the last qualifying spot. On such decisions, tour cards are earned,
and fortunes are made. Steve Stricker came through Q-School in 2005 and
earned $6 million this year. And Memphian Shaun Micheel came out of
nowhere to win the PGA Championship in 2003. Micheel's name came up in
court. Last year, he got a medical exemption to use testosterone. He
and Barron are friends and are the same age. Micheel told ESPN.com last week that the PGA's drug-testing
process "nearly drove me out of the game" and made him question whether
it was worth it to play pro golf. Young said he wouldn't talk about
Micheel "but if the facts had been the same, then his TUE request would
have been turned down."

Barron's wife and this reporter were the only spectators at the
hearing. The case has attracted international attention. Pham took
three days to issue his 33-page ruling after first saying he might have
it in a day. He called it "a close case."

"If Barron is permitted to play in the second qualifying stage
(Q-School), it could raise substantial public policy concerns regarding
the enforcement of anti-doping policies in professional sports," he
wrote in his conclusion.

Rosenblum hinted that he will probe the inner workings of the PGA
Tour through the discovery process if the case goes to trial. It has
been assigned to U.S. district judge Samuel H. Mays. In golf parlance,
Barron went for the green instead of laying up, and his ball landed in
the water. Now he has a year to think about it.

And though Nardo's swaggering flow on "Let's Get It Get It," in particular, is a welcome addition, Teflon Don (aka Don Askew Jr.) doesn't really need the help on this impressive, promising debut. Though his music is familiar -- built on skittery high-hat beats, springy synths, and a rumbling low end -- Teflon

As the year 2009 nears its end, and the 2010 election year beckons, two sets of numbers become even more important. One set, of course, is the amount of money raised by candidates for this or that office. Another set relates to poll figures. And both sets have the capacity to affect each other. Recently mentioned in this space was a poll commissioned by the gubernatorial campaign of Democrat Mike McWherter. At least one recipient of a phone call from

The latest Goner release is Things Are Not All Right, the label's second from Chicago trio CoCoComa, which is led by drummer/singer Bill Roe and guitarist/singer Lisa Roe, initially a simple husband-and-wife duo smartly rounded out by bass and organ from tag-along Mike

Elvis Economics The global economy may still be sagging, but the market for Elvis hair appears to be surging. Last week, Fly on the Wall reported that a wad of Elvis' hair was on the auction block and had an estimated value of $416. The hair, which came with a certificate of authenticity, ultimately sold for $1,770, more than four times its projected value. That's still a fraction of what Elvis hair has sold for previously. Memphis mayor A C Wharton got in some smack talk last Wednesday, in response to Shelby County commissioner Joe Ford's critical remarks earlier in the week about the financial prowess of Wharton's recent administration as county mayor. Ford made the remarks in the course of his then still-unresolved contest with fellow commissioner J.W. Gibson to become interim county mayor. Midway through the nearly 30 ballot-marathon that failed to produce a winner, both Ford and Gibson bridled at Commissioner Deidre Malone's

by Leonard Gill

First, he was calling from his home on Deer Island, Maine, to let me know of his latest book. Then he was headed for the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany to publicize that book, and it wasn't such a great time to talk. Then he was in transit again -- on his way to Havana, where he has a house too (in addition to homes in New York and on St. Croix). But on his way to Cuba, I finally

by Mary Cashiola

Most neighborhoods don't want a junkyard in their community. But Broad Avenue isn't like most neighborhoods, and the Junkyard Museum isn't like most junkyards. The Junkyard will be an interactive museum using found objects and architectural salvage to create climbable sculptures. Though the Junkyard is located temporarily at the old Marine Hospital near the National Ornamental Metal Museum, founder Lisa Williamson would like the museum's permanent home to be on Broad. "I've been looking at Broad for a long time,"

by Joe Conason

Within hours after the House of Representatives approved health-care reform by a narrow margin, Republicans predicted retribution at the polls next fall. They promised to make every Democrat regret that historic vote as the first step toward the reversal of power in Washington. And as the current debate has proved, they aren't going to let honesty become an obstacle. For a preview of coming attractions, simply turn on Fox News or any right-wing radio talker, where the falsehoods of the

Push open the door of the new Farmer's Market Midtown on Union near Belvedere and John Raney is ready with a handshake. "Are you a Midtowner?" he asks. "Welcome to your market!" Greeter, owner, and Midtown enthusiast, Rainey is a retired commercial broker who believes the neighborhood is ready for a metro market specializing in local products and personal service. "We like to say, 'Farm fresh to you,'" Raney says. "If you want beef from Neola Farms six days a

Lucy Shaw has only been on the job for a week and a half, but the new interim facility coordinator for Memphis Animal Services has already started to clean up the mess her predecessor, former shelter director Ernie Alexander, left behind. Shaw, a former CEO of the Regional Medical Center at Memphis, was hired by Mayor A C Wharton to determine what changes need to be made to the animal shelter. Earlier this month, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office raided

It's hard to imagine a greater contrast within a 24-hour window for University of Memphis athletics. Friday night at FedExForum, 17,584 fans turned out to greet 32-year-old rookie basketball coach Josh Pastner for the Tigers' regular-season opener against Jackson State. Then at noon Saturday, an announced 18,031 fans sat in the Liberty Bowl to say goodbye to 55-year-old football coach Tommy West, whose dismissal after nine years at the Tiger helm was announced five days earlier. As tends to happen

by Greg Akers

The Blind Side is a Hollywood version of the book of the same name about how a wealthy, white, East Memphis family took in a destitute black kid from the projects, saved him from a life destined for unrealized potential, and facilitated his rise to college-football prospect and eventual NFL first-rounder. The young man is Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) and the family is the Tuohys -- mom Leigh Anne (Sandra Bullock), dad Sean (Tim McGraw), teenage daughter Collins (Lily Collins),
