The notion that only non-profits do good is not just outdated, but was never accurate to begin with. The reality is that "good" is not confined to the services provided by non-profits. The danger in believing that only non-profits do good is that we limit ourselves in our understanding of how, as individuals, we can do good.
Non-profit organizations enable others to do good by providing volunteer opportunities and a place to donate resources to, but there are so many other ways an individual can have a positive impact on our world: give directions to someone who is lost; recycle, but beyond that, try reducing your waste in the first place.
Doing good is not based on who is doing it, but that it is being done. What things in your life can have an impact on others? Being %u201Cthe change that [you] seek%u201D is not limited to obvious actions. Non-profits offer wonderful resources and services, but we should not limit ourselves to believing this type of organization is the only way to do good.

Great inspiration to motivate us to continue to do good in our everyday lives!

I too believe that we all have the power to create change in our environment by starting with ourselves and being conscientious of the connection we have with all that lives around us. Shibata for Supervisor!

Ironically enough, non-profits and NGOs have become like corporatized entities in that they become not just a model, but THE model of "do-gooding." To receive help from a volunteer of an official organization can only go so far, whereas extending help and creating mutually beneficial relations on a person-to-person basis puts a more human and a more real impact.
Why NOT take a risk to try new, more human avenues in helping people (and ourselves) understand and benefit from one another?
"Doing good is not based on who is doing it, but that it is being done." -- and I agree whole heartedly.
I think the point is not just to help others, but also to figure out how helping others also impacts ourselves as well. ^__^

I agree with several points you made- non-profits provide access to "doing good" by making us aware of issues and ways that we can help, but they are not the only way. Individuals have the capacity to do good and initiate change at many levels, and the small, often unnoticed forms (like giving directions) may make the most impact, especially when done with humility and kindness.

This is an inspirational entry. We can do good every single day :). Thank you for your ideas.

Agreed. Great example is each individual's carbon footprint http://bit.ly/MUe3Q . Clearly a way to examine your impact, and a measurable way to "do good" w/out having the need for an institution. Just one example as there are clearly many other ways to take action.
