When Humanitarians and Sustainable Design Collide

Inspired by more than the American Dream, Journeyman International partners university students with local and global humanitarian organizations to complete meaningful projects.

Daniel Wiens was getting ready to graduate from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California with a degree in construction management. Most students were preparing to work on theoretical thesis projects. He decided there had to be a more practical, meaningful approach so he partnered with an architecture student and they designed and built a dental clinic in Belize.

This would mark the beginning of Journeyman International (JI).

The award, which is given for significant corporate or collective contributions to the success of the BCWWA, was presented at the association’s annual conference, held this year in Kelowna.

AECOM designed and supervised the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage 2A project to improve Victoria Harbour’s water quality — benefiting approximately six million people.

According to Hong Kong’s Drainage Services Department, every day, the country’s 7-million-plus residents generate 2.6 million cubic meters (92 million cubic feet) of raw sewage — the equivalent of 1,400 Olympic-sized swimming pools — much of which is discharged into Victoria Harbour.
