Red Nose Day joins efforts to prepare underserved youth to compete in today’s digital workforce

Those words drive the mission of the Maryland Center for Veterans Education and Training (MCVET), an organization that provides housing and comprehensive services to homeless veterans and to help them rejoin their communities. While the center is located in Baltimore, veterans come from all over the country to find shelter there — and a path to success in their civilian lives.
From their time in the Galang Refugee Camp in Indonesia, siblings John and Roy Doan shared everything. Once in the United States, Roy took care of his younger brother. He taught John how to ride a bike and drive a car. John looked up to Roy.
In their early 30s their roles reversed. Roy was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and dementia. Roy now lives in a supportive group home and has a limited ability to work.
We were honored to receive the 2017 Secretary of Defense Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Freedom Award. Nominations of employers can be made only by Guard and Reserve employees or a family member acting on their behalf. In 2017, Comcast NBCUniversal received more than 30 individual nominations.
NBC and Telemundo owned stations are deeply rooted in the communities they serve. With efforts that include nationwide awareness campaigns focused on helping teachers and students in need and annual health fairs that attract thousands of people and deliver vital preventive health screenings and services, the NBC and Telemundo stations are invested in creating long-term good.

On September 15, 1963, four Ku Klux Klansmen planted 15 sticks of dynamite and a timing device in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Four African-American girls between the ages of 11 and 14 were killed in the blast. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called it “one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity.”
Sarah Collins Rudolph, sister of victim Addie May Collins, was there too. Yet even though Rudolph was part of one of the watershed moments in civil rights history, her story has seldom been told.
