During the month of May, Smithfield Foods’ hunger relief initiative, Helping Hungry Homes®, visited nine communities from coast to coast and donated more than 330,000 pounds of protein—the equivalent of more than 1,320,000 servings—to those in need. This year, Smithfield celebrates the 10-year anniversary of Helping Hungry Homes®. Smithfield has provided more than 100 million servings of protein to food banks, disaster relief efforts, and community outreach programs since the program’s inception.

These women are typically nearing 30 years old, already have several children, and are always leading lives vastly different than my own. In Kanari, Nepal, my host mother, Priyanka, was younger than me, with two girls ages seven and five. She had gone to school for a few years as a child, but married in her teens and had been a farmer most of her life.
