Global power leader Cummins is working on three projects that use hydrogen production as a means to store renewable energy, a key issue for proponents of wind, solar and other low-carbon renewable energy sources.

Using renewable sources such as wind to produce hydrogen emits no greenhouse gases. Wind energy can be converted into hydrogen using an electrolyzer and utilized in several ways – from fuel-cell hydrogen trucks, buses and trains, to ships powered by liquid ammonia made from hydrogen, to a substitute for natural gas for heating homes.

One of the world’s first hydrogen-powered aircraft, using global power leader Cummins’ fuel cell technology, was unveiled at the Stuttgart Airport late last year in Germany. Called the DLR-HY4, the four-seat airplane has successfully completed 30 2-hour test flights.

Cummins has endorsed a recent Business Roundtable statement supporting efforts to advance voter accessibility in the United States, Chairman and CEO Tom Linebarger announced last week.

Innovation in both internal combustion and alternative technologies is the best way to achieve important environmental benefits today and a carbon-neutral future, a Cummins leader told a U.S. Senate committee Tuesday.

Vice Chairman Tony Satterthwaite testified that advanced internal combustion engines can achieve immediate reductions in air pollutants and carbon emissions while the infrastructure and manufacturing scale develops for low-carbon technologies like battery and fuel cell electric powertrains.
