Many of the companies we work with at Common Impact host a Day of Service as a way to give back to their local communities. According to the most recent CECP Giving In Numbers, days of service are one of the most popular corporate volunteer programs with more than 77% of US companies offering this type of opportunity to employees. Currently, most days of service engage teams in volunteer projects like building a home, cleaning a local park or packing groceries at a food bank.

Recognized as one of history’s most influential leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work continues to inspire communities to come together and elevate doing good through service.
In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Every third Monday in January, good people across the country come together to lean into MLK’s legacy and observe the MLK Day of Service as a “day on,” rather than not a “day off.”

Volunteers spend a "day on" enhancing Warren G. Harding Middle School in Philadelphia
Aramark employees, families and friends this week honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In Philadelphia, dozens of volunteers joined in a day of service at Warren G. Harding Middle School. The group helped revitalize the girls’ cafeteria, painting inspirational murals, sports logos and vibrant designs to create a more welcoming space for the students it serves.
There are two federally recognized National Days of Service. One is on September 11th. The other is on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (in 2017, it falls on Monday, January 16th).
Why do these holidays exist? According to the founders of 9/11 Day, “The goal of 9/11 Day is to keep alive the spirit of unity and compassion that arose in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, providing a positive, helpful way for people to annually remember and pay tribute to the 9/11 victims, and honor those that rose in service in response to the attacks.”
On October 7th, 2016, Shire hosted its second annual Global Day of Service. Over one-third of the employees of our recently combined company participated in volunteer projects worldwide. Employee volunteers dedicated over 25,000 hours of their time in 150+ locations around the globe. Many projects focused on children “overcoming odds,” from our employees helping prepare the SeriousFun Children’s Network camp in Ireland for fall programs, to developing activity booklets for sick children in Switzerland.
