El Abra, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Receives Award for Renewable Energy Project

December 6, 2016 /3BL Media/ - The El Abra mining operation recently received the National Environmental Award 2016 from the Recyclápolis Foundation for its part in a project that built Chile's first community hybrid power plant.

The Recyclápolis Foundation recognized El Abra for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship in funding the power plant, which provides 150 families in the community of Ollagüe in Chile with their first continuous supply of electric power.

The Freeport Foundation in Chile Supports a Technical School in Calama

A new technical school in Calama, Chile, was built in part with funds from the Freeport Foundation in Chile.

Freeport-McMoRan and Codelco, the Chilean state mining company, financed the first stage of construction of Colegio Técnico Industrial Don Bosco de Calama.

The school opened in March of this year and has enrolled 490 middle and high school students, including indigenous children who live in the Province of El Loa near the El Abra mining operations. The school is free to attend. Students will focus on technical studies in mining and electrical and mechanical skills.

July 21, 2015 /3BL Media/ - El Abra recently announced the 66 recipients of its annual Indigenous Scholarship Program. Everyone who applied this year was awarded a scholarship.

El Abra increased the number of scholarships available – nearly double the number from last year – to ensure that each of the 66 youth who applied had the opportunity to receive one.

The goal is to strengthen El Abra's commitment to the development, education and training of members of the indigenous communities surrounding mining operations.

The 2014 Best Practices in Mining Award came from Chile’s Mining Council. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet presented the award to El Abra General Manager of Administration John Gordon at the Council’s annual dinner and awards program in January.

The Association specifically recognized El Abra for its work with the Atacamenian, Quechuan and Aymara ethnic groups in Calama and Ollagüe, Chile. El Abra supports programs and projects that aim to preserve local heritage and ancestral traditions while at the same contribute to sustainable development in the region.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Debuts Online Business Training Program for Women

Twenty women from the Copiapó Province in Chile inaugurated the test phase of a new online business academy for women in Chile and Peru. The academy was created through a partnership between Freeport-McMoRan and the Thunderbird School of Global Business Management.

The program is called DreamBuilder: The Women’s Business Creator. It is currently being piloted in communities surrounding the Company’s mining operations in South America; Cerro Verde in Peru, and Candelaria/ Ojos del Salado and El Abra in Chile.
