Total energy consumed is one of the most important mill metrics we have. It captures the efficiency of our operations in both the numerator (gigajoules of energy used) and the denominator (air-dried metric tons of paper produced). By running our mills more efficiently, energy consumption is lowered. If we ensure that all of the products we produce are saleable, then we avoid the energy waste associated with remaking the products.

Individuals and organizations are being recognized for their outstanding contribution to tree planting, conservation and stewardship. The winners will be presented their award at a reception in their honor in their local community throughout the month of May.
Many environmental management programs offer people incentives to engage in conservation activities. But these activities, carried out on a local level, often are difficult to monitor. Are people inclined to cheat to get the incentives? Research led by Rohit Jindal of the MacEwan University Business School in Edmonton, Alberta and Erb Institute Faculty Director Joe Árvai set out to answer this question.
The following offers a view of our annual performance in important areas of environmental and social responsibility. We monitor key metrics for fiber, emissions, energy usage and the impact of our operations on air, water and solid waste. We use this data to set improvement goals for our operations and interactions with key stakeholders.
Every year, the SFI Implementation Committees pool and distribute resources, contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to various organizations in support of conservation, research and education. Since 1995, SFI participants have collectively contributed over $1.6 billion to conservation efforts.
Our wood procurement group for the Cloquet Mill supports numerous conservation projects through direct funding and in-kind resources, as well as through the collaborative efforts of the SFI Implementation Committees in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
