PT Freeport Indonesia Repatriated 15 Tropical Birds Back Into Rainforests of Papua

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Environmental Department helped return to the wild 15 native birds from the North Sumatra Natural Conservation Center.

Exotic birds make up the majority of trafficked wildlife. The repatriated birds are three large yellow birds of paradise, two black headed Pesquet parrots, nine sulfur crested cockatoos, and one long-tailed parakeet. The birds were kept in quarantine at the PTFI Environmental Department prior to release into their original habitat.

Fauna endemic to Papua is continuously and consistently monitored and protected.

Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Supported Technical School in Calama, Chile Graduates First Generation of Students

The Colegio Don Bosco De Calama recently graduated its first class of 141 students in December.

The school, opened in 2016, educates middle and high school students, including indigenous children who live in the Province of El Loa near the El Abra mining operations. Students focus on technical studies in mining and electrical and mechanical skills. Enrollment is free to the more than 750 students who currently attend the school.

Freeport-McMoRan and Minera El Abra, along with Codelco and Antofogasta Minerals, financially contribute to the vocational school.

The School of Leaders: Empodérate El Loa Program, a partnership of Emprende Joven and the Minera El Abra School Fund, promotes social-emotional skills for students and provides teacher training in the Calama region of Chile.

Social-emotional skills include the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for youth to recognize and control their emotions and behaviors. Social-emotional skills are what is used to establish and maintain positive relationships, make responsible decisions, solve challenging situations, and set and achieve positive goals.

The Environmental Fund of Minera El Abra, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Inaugurates Three Recycling Stations

Together for a Sustainable Calama is the name of the recycling project that will benefit more than 4,000 people in the towns of Tocopilla, Calama, María Elena and Alto Loa in the Calama region of Chile.

The stations will recycle paper and plastics and feature murals that celebrate local history and heritage. The project also involves recycling training and workshops for children.
