Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde has an Agricultural Development Program for farmers in the Yarabamba and Uchumayo Districts of Peru that provides services to business owners including education and information on warehouses and greenhouses.

Cerro Verde has model farms and demonstration plots for education. Farmers raise laying hens, ducks, and guinea pigs. Many local farmers also grow culinary herbs and succulents, as well as fruits, potatoes and quinoa.

Freeport-McMoRan’s Morenci copper mining operations were recently honored by the Arizona Mining Association with the 2018 Sustainability, Preservation and Diversity in Environment award in recognition of environmental excellence.

The award recognized the Morenci operations for its role in protecting and monitoring some 1.5 million bats roosting in two areas – a nearby cave and a historic mine opening – as well as for conservation education outreach in the community.
