As an international event, it’s a great way of showing our employees that they are part of an organization that is committed to environmental sustainability issues across the globe. Each year on Earth Day, teams of employees in different countries take part in environmental improvement projects in their communities, and encourage recycling programs at their offices.

The idea arose in 2004 after a party we had thrown. And unlike so many other ideas that are born after a party (or during it), this one actually became reality. It all started when one of us raised the question of why we actually return empty bottles to the supermarket. To get a refund for the deposit (in Germany the deposit system is quite big) or just to get rid of some unwanted waste? For us, the answer was the latter and that’s how the idea of donating deposit slips was born.

To mark the occasion of the Cotton made in Africa Fashion Contest, design student Michelle Thornhill created a t-shirt that combines traditional African prints with modern design. The shirt is available at the OTTO online shop since April 23. Under the “Design instead of Jute” motto, the South African convinced the well-known Cotton made in Africa Fashion Contest 2012 jury with her design for a dress made of raw cotton. She took first place over 21 other international contestants. Her prize was the opportunity to create a t-shirt exclusively for OTTO.
