At Goldcorp, we take pride in the relationships and agreements that have been developed by working closely with local indigenous communities in the areas where we operate in Canada. We collaborate with our First Nations partners and community members to support entrepreneurship, increase indigenous employment and business opportunities, implement community initiatives and programs, and incorporate cultural and social practices and considerations into our mine planning and operations.

Goldcorp’s Marlin mine ceased production on May 31, 2017 marking the end of more than a decade of strong community ties and sustainable mining practices. Located in the western highlands of Guatemala, in the municipality of San Miguel Ixtahuacan approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Guatemala City, Marlin began production in late 2005 and became a part of the Goldcorp portfolio with the acquisition of Glamis Gold in 2006. The mine operated as both an open pit and underground mine for 12 years, producing 2.3 million ounces of gold and 63 million ounces of silver.

In this final installment of our four part series on diversity and inclusion in our workplace, we look at how large scale operations and projects have the potential to significantly boost the profile of women in mining and inspire increased inclusivity and innovation.

Like many companies in traditionally male-dominated industries, one of the challenges Goldcorp faces as a company is diversity in the workforce. We aim to provide opportunities that enable women to move past perceived barriers or specific skill-sets, and consider their potential.
