Delivering the Energy the World Needs, Safely and Reliably

Article

On January 22, 2014, TransCanada announced that the Gulf Coast Project — the safest pipeline ever built on U.S. soil — began delivering crude oil from Cushing, Oklahoma, to state-of-the-art refineries in Texas.

The completion of this US$2.6-billion crude oil pipeline provides a safe and direct connection between the important oil hub in Cushing and delivery points on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

TransCanada: Delivering on our Promise of Pipeline Safety

At TransCanada, the safety and the integrity of our pipelines is at the heart of everything we do. Before we put a pipeline into service, we inspect and perform nondestructive testing of every weld, every pipe joint, every valve and every fitting to make sure it is installed properly and ready to go into service. Our construction quality management is designed to ensure that we detect and repair any defects in materials and workmanship, and that any repairs are completely tested before any oil or gas flows through the pipeline.

Growing up in soggy Southeast Texas, Joe Penland saw firsthand what a struggle the oil and gas industry faces moving heavy equipment through the perennial muck that covers much of the low-lying countryside.

An ironworker by trade, the young Penland watched as gangs of 30 and 40 workers struggled to lay a plank road or drilling pad, tossing timbers onto the ground and lining them up. It was hard, dangerous, time-consuming work.

Napoleon once famously said that an army marches on its stomach.

In the pipeline construction industry, crews run on water. Especially in Southeast Texas, and especially in deepest summer, hydration is a crucial safety matter. Crews are constantly encouraged to stay hydrated and to keep ahead of the game by drinking water before they’re thirsty.

And all that water goes down better when it’s cold.

That isn’t news to Jeremy Kunk, owner of Read Ice Company in Kountze, Texas, 25 miles northwest of Beaumont.

Blog: TransCanada uses the Latest Proven Technology to Detect Leaks

Blog

A headline in the news this week suggested TransCanada may not be employing the latest, proven technologies available in the construction and operation of our new oil pipelines, Keystone XL and the Gulf Coast Pipeline. This is certainly not the case.

All technologies that can enhance the safety of our pipelines are given thorough consideration and certain technologies – such as infrared and fiber optic cable systems – may not be feasible to adopt at a particular point in time because they have not been fully proven in a broad operating application such as Keystone.

From the selection and testing of the steel at the pipe mill to the ongoing testing and inspection of the pipe during and after construction and then over the life of the pipeline, TransCanada’s care and scrutiny is designed to make sure the pipeline performs as promised. Our commitment to customers, public safety and the environment demands nothing less.
