HERSHEY, Pa., May 4, 2020, /3BL Media/ The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY) has announced that it is committing $1 million to acquire, install and staff a new manufacturing line dedicated to the production of facemasks. The new line, which will be capable of producing up to 45,000 masks per day, will become operational near the end of May.
Since 2013, we have distributed more than 7.4 million tree seedlings to cocoa farmers and 920,000 multi-purpose shade trees as part of our ongoing, industry-leading agroforestry work to protect the forest and preserve biodiversity. The world loves chocolate. But the world needs trees – now more than ever. The challenge is that trees are disappearing at alarming rates and sometimes that is due to the production of cocoa to make chocolate. In the past 60 years, 90% of Côte d’Ivoire’s forests have disappeared according to NGO Mighty Earth.
It’s a situation that strikes home for me having grown up around trees on the island of Crete. I take this issue seriously, and for me, it’s personal.

Forests. Growing up, I had never really thought a lot about them.
I like open spaces; beaches, the sea, mountains with far sights and clear skies. And I never hugged a tree as a child either. I did climb in them, but only for the sights I could see from a higher vantage point.
In school they taught us about the Amazon in Brazil; the "lungs of our earth." They had to be saved. But those were different – they were “special forests.” Not like the family olive trees I grew up with in Crete.
The traditional stepping stones to the chief executive position are jobs responsible for the bottom line—such as head of division—and those roles are still overwhelmingly filled by men
