Teens in Houston Regularly Drive with Multiple Teen Passengers and No Adults, Despite Significant Risks

(TMS), today announced Houston findings from a major, national study of teen drivers (ages 16 to 18) and parents of teen drivers conducted jointly with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).
The link between health care spending and quality is still unclear, according to a new review of past studies by the Rand Corporation. The report analyzes results from 61 studies that compared health care spending with outcomes on both hospital-wide and statewide levels. Twenty-one of the 61 studies showed higher spending was tied to better outcomes for patients, such as fewer deaths.

Starbucks has opened its third profit-sharing community store in the East End community of Houston. The other two community stores are in Los Angeles and New York. A share of the profits from each store goes to specific organizations that serve the needs of the citizens in that community. In Houston, the funds will go to the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans, which helps disadvantaged and at-risk youth in the East End.
Kaiser Permanente has joined with five other health systems in the Care Connectivity Consortium to connect doctors electronically. Since its formation, the Consortium has developed standards-based information technology to connect doctors across the country.
CITGO Fueling Good winner, Bess the Book Bus, paid a visit to Houston this week, giving away thousands of books and causing thousands of smiles.
Bess the Book Bus is a national mobile literacy outreach program sponsored by CITGO. The mobile literacy program, founded by Jennifer Frances in 2002, is dedicated to providing new books to underserved children and families throughout the country. Since its inception, the program has served 18,000 children.
Chesapeake Energy will sell $13 to $14 billion dollars in assets by the end of this year, mostly of natural gas drilling land. The company, one of the nation’s largest natural gas producers, needs to service the debt it accumulated while buying up land during the production boom. Despite the near-decade low prices on the natural gas market, Chesapeake also expects production to be up 18 percent this year over last year.
