PLEASANTON and LOS ANGELES, Calif., November 3, 2014 /3BL Media/ — The Safeway Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) have announced that Hunger Is, their joint charitable initiative to fight childhood hunger in America, has awarded over $1.3 million in grants to 198 local charities to connect hungry children living in neighborhoods to healthy food throughout the country.
Supporting local hunger relief programs is a natural fit for us as a neighborhood grocery store. We are proud to collaborate with our customers to be one of the largest contributors to food banks and feeding programs in the communities we serve.
In 2013, Safeway donated an estimated 71,935,464 pounds of food from our stores, plants, distribution centers and other facilities, which is equivalent to 59,946,220 meals* and worth more than $129 million. We work with many local hunger relief organizations to distribute the food where it is needed most.
