Scientific labs produce a ton of waste: plastic pipette tips and the plastic racks that hold them, plastic foam coolers that house chemicals and cells, surplus solvents that expire in storage. They also rack up big energy bills: special freezers keep experiments cold, high-tech vents keep air clean, and dedicated machines keep equipment sterile.

Curiosity Cube Teaches Science to ConVal Students

Elementary and middle school students from the ConVal School District spent Thursday in a brightly colored shipping container conducting science experiments.

The container – known as the Curiosity Cube – has been retrofitted by MilliporeSigma into a mobile science lab. The Cube, which made an appearance in the ConVal High School parking lot Thursday, travels the country to encourage an interest in science among children.

My impatience has been a red thread through many of my experiences, specifically in a space that is chock-full of opportunity, like our Corporate Responsibility work at MilliporeSigma. This experience started years ago with a novel product now known as Cyrene™. One of my team members did the legwork to identify a novel solution that could be a potential replacement for two challenging but ubiquitous solvents. While these solvents are extremely common, they’re under increasing scrutiny from organizations like Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).
