NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 21, 2016 /3BL Media/ – Norfolk Southern’s safety train recently completed its 2016 tour, training 1,926 first responders in 18 cities in 13 states across NS’ rail network. With rolling classrooms and hands-on activities, the safety train provided free training to firefighters, police officers, emergency management personnel, and other first responders on how to safely respond to a rail-related hazardous materials incident.
Recognizing the benefits of a diverse workforce, Norfolk Southern has established employee Diversity and Inclusion Councils in each of its 10 operating divisions. These grassroots councils promote a respectful workplace, contribute to business goals, and maximize employee potential. By the end of 2015, more than 200 employees were serving on the councils.
In 2015, more than 8,700 employees – about 30 percent of NS’ workforce – earned points and pocketed up to $260 a year by walking, participating in challenges, and tracking their health through this WellNS program. Employees at more than 50 work locations across NS can monitor their weight, blood pressure, and body mass index at “HealthZone” stations.
As part of a unique public-private partnership, Norfolk Southern is helping communities enhance air quality with the development of a new class of low-emission rail yard locomotives dubbed the “Eco” locomotive.
In 2015, NS introduced the Eco units at its Inman Yard in Atlanta and at its 47th Street Intermodal Facility in Chicago. NS delivered 10 of the locomotives to Atlanta and 15 to Chicago.
Norfolk Southern is an industry leader in exploring alternative energy sources to reduce locomotive emissions. During 2015, NS made research gains in the use of battery technology and compressed natural gas in its quest to conserve fuel, reduce fuel costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Before joining Norfolk Southern in 1999, Stephen Young had never been involved in community volunteer work. Now, Young, manager intermodal equipment, is a fixture with the Norfolk Thoroughbred Volunteers. He has twice earned Volunteer of the Year award for most volunteer hours and has chaired the group for the past year.
Eight years ago, Norfolk Southern launched a plan to upgrade energy efficiencies at offices and facilities across its 22-state system, a huge undertaking involving hundreds of locations. One key project in 2015 included an energy overhaul of its operations headquarters in Atlanta. The initiative earned NS more than $20,820 in rebates through Georgia Power’s Commercial Energy Efficiency program.
