Volunteer employees, family members, and friends will clean up Piedmont Park and improve its walking paths and running tracks. “It’s a way we can come together and give back to the community where we work and also contribute to a healthy environment,” said Esi Waters, manager corporate sustainability.
Norfolk Southern’s locomotive rebuild program, unique among large U.S. railroads, extends the useful life of locomotives, generates substantial capital savings, and reduces environmental impacts. The in-house knowledge developed has given the company more independence and greater control over assets vital to the business.
Norfolk Southern locomotives operating in revenue service achieved an overall 2.2 percent gain in fuel efficiency in 2014.
During the year, revenue trains burned nearly 494 million gallons of diesel fuel while rolling up 205 billion revenue ton-miles. On average, the trains moved a ton of freight 415 miles on a gallon of diesel, up from 406 miles in 2013.
Norfolk Southern’s efforts to engage stakeholders fosters open dialogue and understanding of mutual interests and goals. This helps the railroad improve performance and achieve industry leadership across the spectrum of corporate responsibility.
