Freeport-McMoRan’s Mine Training Institute created the San Carlos Training Institute in 2013 to increase the employability skills and job opportunities for the San Carlos Apache Tribe students while growing a qualified workforce for company mine operations near the Globe-Miami area in Central Arizona.

The latest class session started in July 2019 and includes life skills coaching and training in everything from heavy equipment operations and maintenance to electrical applications. More than 640 students have graduated from the training institute as of June 2019.

Freeport-McMoRan’s local stakeholder engagement and social investment objectives include formal interactions with indigenous peoples in traditional communities of Alto El Loa in Chile.

To complement the Indigenous Peoples Employment Program established in 2017, El Abra started a new apprenticeship program to provide work experience to students who have completed post-secondary education. Seven communities participate in the Indigenous People Employment Program and by the end of 2018, more than 50 members of neighboring communities were employed by El Abra.

Since 2011, Freeport-McMoRan’s Pollinator Conservation Initiative has sought to increase the habitat for pollinators and to provide learners of all ages with opportunities to engage with topics in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Today, more than a dozen Freeport-McMoRan operations in North America have implemented pollinator conservation and education projects both on and off company property.

Minera El Abra, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, is Recognized for Lowering Carbon Footprint With Tire Recovery Program

October 17, 2019 /3BL Media/ — Thanks to a new tire renewal program, Minera El Abra, a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan, was recognized for reducing its CO2 emission by 53 tons – or 35 percent.

The program, developed by KalTire Chile, helped El Abra reuse 31 mining equipment tires in 2018, which eliminated the need to produce 26 new tires.
