Cerro Verde, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Lauded for Commitment to Guanaco Conservation

Cerro Verde, in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, hosted an international group of scientists, biologists and researchers in a virtual event to evaluate the site’s guanaco conservation program and discuss research and recommendations moving forward to protect the population. 

Guanacos are listed as critically endangered by the Peruvian government. Peru, one of five South American countries with guanacos, has a population of about 3,500 guanacos. 

PT Freeport Indonesia Wins National Award for COVID-19 Transmission Prevention and Community Awareness

Indonesia's Department of Public Health has bestowed its highest recognition to PT Freeport Indonesia for its workplace protocols and efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the Mimika Regency of Papua, Indonesia, where Freeport-McMoRan’s Grasberg mining complex is located.

In addition to prevention efforts, PT Freeport Indonesia continues to assist in the care of COVID-19 patients in Mimika. The company has allowed facilities such as the Mimika Sports Complex and its Athletes' Dormitories to be used as an isolation ward for patients in quarantine in Timika.

Freeport-McMoRan’s Tyrone operations won Safe Operator of the Year award from the New Mexico Bureau of Mine Safety.

Tyrone won in the Bureau's Large Mines category of its recently announced 2020 Mine Safety Awards (the period for the awards is July 1, 2019 to July 1, 2020). Tyrone also took home the award four of the previous six years.  

The New Mexico Bureau of Mine Safety promotes the safety of all miners in New Mexico, and its annual awards recognize safe operators in multiple categories.

Freeport-McMoRan Helps Bring Renewable Water Resources to Arizona Communities Through Joint Pipeline Project

Freeport-McMoRan's Sierrita operations and Farmers Investment Co are celebrating the completion of a pipeline that will deliver Central Arizona Project water for agricultural purposes and help restore the local aquifer in the Sahuarita/Green Valley area.

Freeport-McMoRan contributed $11.2 million of the $17.1 million privately funded pipeline that is instrumental in improving regional groundwater levels in the Sahuarita/Green Valley area. The renewable water supplies will benefit all water users in the region, including the Tohono O'odham Nation's San Xavier District.

PT Freeport Indonesia's Malaria Control Center is Working to Eradicate Malaria in Papua by 2026

PT Freeport Indonesia’s malaria eradication mission is part of its commitment to community health care and social services.

The program, coordinated with the government’s Mimika Regency Malaria Case Mapping as part of the roadmap to eradicate malaria by 2026, includes providing communities with insecticide spraying service in homes and businesses and blood testing to check malaria status.

The PTFI outreach team contacts approximately six households per day for malaria blood sampling, or 30-50 people in total. The blood sampling aims to ensure the spraying’s effectiveness.

Freeport-McMoRan Helps Discover Two New Crab Species in Papua

Two new species of crab have been discovered in the rich ecosystem of the Ajkwa River estuary by the PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) biodiversity research team.

The two new species are Typhlocarcinops raouli and Typhlocarcinops robustus. The two new crabs were discovered by a team of researchers from PT-FI and the Indonesian Institute of Science.

Since PTFI's research began in 2001 as part of its environmental commitment to track the biodiversity of the estuary, more than 100 species of crabs have been found in these areas, 21 of which are new discoveries.

PT Freeport Indonesia Reduces the Use of Plastic Water Bottles to Almost Zero

At Freeport-McMoRan’s operation in Papua, Indonesia, plastic water bottle use went from almost 5 million bottles a year to zero thanks to the implementation of drinking water stations and a successful awareness campaign.

PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) installed water tanks, dispensing stations and even stations for employees to wash the reusable bottles they were issued. Potable water systems were made available throughout operations and communities.
