El Abra operations recently received a Silver Seal Energy Efficiency Award from the Chilean Ministry of Energy and the National Sustainability Agency for its ongoing efforts to improve energy consumption and efficiency in mining operations.

The award, presented at a formal ceremony in January 2020, is given by the ministry to private companies that show a high level of commitment to energy efficiency. El Abra specifically was recognized for its work in the area of cathode production.

PT Freeport Indonesia Repatriated 15 Tropical Birds Back Into Rainforests of Papua

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Environmental Department helped return to the wild 15 native birds from the North Sumatra Natural Conservation Center.

Exotic birds make up the majority of trafficked wildlife. The repatriated birds are three large yellow birds of paradise, two black headed Pesquet parrots, nine sulfur crested cockatoos, and one long-tailed parakeet. The birds were kept in quarantine at the PTFI Environmental Department prior to release into their original habitat.

Fauna endemic to Papua is continuously and consistently monitored and protected.

Climax Molybdenum, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Provides Funding for Teacher Training

Climax Molybdenum recently awarded a grant through the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation's Climax-Area Community Investment Fund for teaching social emotional development to the youth of Eagle County Colorado.

Teachers at Eagle County School will be trained in a comprehensive wellness and prevention plan that helps young people learn coping and resiliency skills. The program is a partnership with Mountain Youth.

Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Supported Technical School in Calama, Chile Graduates First Generation of Students

The Colegio Don Bosco De Calama recently graduated its first class of 141 students in December.

The school, opened in 2016, educates middle and high school students, including indigenous children who live in the Province of El Loa near the El Abra mining operations. Students focus on technical studies in mining and electrical and mechanical skills. Enrollment is free to the more than 750 students who currently attend the school.

Freeport-McMoRan and Minera El Abra, along with Codelco and Antofogasta Minerals, financially contribute to the vocational school.

Together for a Sustainable Calama is the name of the recycling project that will benefit more than 4,000 people in the towns of Tocopilla, Calama, María Elena and Alto Loa in the Calama region of Chile.

The stations will recycle paper and plastics and feature murals that celebrate local history and heritage. The project also involves recycling training and workshops for children.
