The Greenlee County CIF is overseen by a committee of community leaders assembled by the Freeport-McMoRan Community Partnership Panel, to identify and address community needs in health care, education, environment, economic development and transportation.

El Abra, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Installs Solar Panels for Clean Water System in Rural Chile

Minera El Abra recently helped nearby residents of Lasana receive cheaper clean water by donating a photovoltaic system that will help reduce residential electric bills.

The plant uses 20 solar panels, which is projected to reduce the electric bills of the residents of the rural town in the northern Antofagasta region of Chile by more than 50 percent.

Freeport-McMoRan Awards Grant for Tech Park in Sahuarita, Arizona

The Town of Sahuarita, Arizona, broke ground on construction of the Sahuarita Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Center (SAMTEC).

Freeport-McMoRan’s Sierrita copper mine is located near Sahuarita, AZ, and recently awarded a grant of $335,000 toward construction of the 32,000-square-foot building that will host the Small Business Innovation Research and Technology Incubator. SAMTEC has also received a federal grant through the U.S. Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration. The tech park is expected to create and retain jobs for the community.

Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Grant Preserves and Honors New Mexico Mining History

In March 2019, the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation awarded a $65,000 grant to be used toward much-needed preservation work at the cemetery in Dawson, New Mexico. Hundreds of miners were laid to rest in the early 1900s at the cemetery, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Preservation work included a new fence to keep animals such as cattle and elk from damaging the headstones, a new drainage system and general maintenance.

El Abra, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Provides Free Technical Training for Chileans

December 12, 2019 /3BL Media/ - Minera El Abra, in partnership with the Mining Talent Veins program of Fundación Chile, and with the support of the Municipality of Tocopilla, provided free certified training in welding and solar panel installation. The goal is to increase the employability of community members.

The courses provide theoretical and practical knowledge in welding. Participants are also trained in the assembly and maintenance of photovoltaic solar installations and quality and safety regulation compliance.

Freeport-McMoRan Provides Technical Training for San Carlos Apache Tribe

Freeport-McMoRan’s Mine Training Institute created the San Carlos Training Institute in 2013 to increase the employability skills and job opportunities for the San Carlos Apache Tribe students while growing a qualified workforce for company mine operations near the Globe-Miami area in Central Arizona.

The latest class session started in July 2019 and includes life skills coaching and training in everything from heavy equipment operations and maintenance to electrical applications. More than 640 students have graduated from the training institute as of June 2019.
