January 15, 2019 - The Central Market of Calama recently unveiled a newly painted façade for the popular commercial building thanks to the support of Minera El Abra, a Freeport-McMoRan company.

Improving the appearance of the city’s Latorre Commercial District was an initiative of Calama Plus, which brings together several companies and organizations operating in Calama such as El Abra, a Freeport-McMoRan company, the municipality of Calama, Sercotec, and the Central Market Community.

Cerro Verde, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Plants Trees for Afforestation Project

Minera Sociedad Cerro Verde distributed 3,000 trees in the Uchumayo District of Peru between 2017 and 2018 as part of its afforestation project.

Trees are important, as they absorb carbon dioxide, generate oxygen, and improve the quality of the air along with preventing erosion and degradation of the soil. Trees reduce noise pollution by absorbing the sounds of traffic, sirens and construction – their foliage acts as acoustic insulators.

Cerro Verde, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Supports Local Agricultural Businesses

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde has an Agricultural Development Program for farmers in the Yarabamba and Uchumayo Districts of Peru that provides services to business owners including education and information on warehouses and greenhouses.

Cerro Verde has model farms and demonstration plots for education. Farmers raise laying hens, ducks, and guinea pigs. Many local farmers also grow culinary herbs and succulents, as well as fruits, potatoes and quinoa.

Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Provides $62,000 Grant to the Gila Watershed Partnership in Arizona

Freeport-McMoRan Foundation recently awarded the Gila Watershed Partnership in Arizona a $62,000 grant to improve and double the size of the Gila Native Plant Nursery in Safford, Arizona.

The Gila Watershed Partnership  was founded in 1992 to improve the Upper Gila Watershed of Arizona and has earned a number of grants from Freeport-McMoRan in addition to a $200,000 grant from Graham County and $150,000 grant from Greenlee County.

Freeport-McMoRan’s Morenci Mine Receives Award for Bat Preservation Program

Freeport-McMoRan’s Morenci copper mining operations were recently honored by the Arizona Mining Association with the 2018 Sustainability, Preservation and Diversity in Environment award in recognition of environmental excellence.

The award recognized the Morenci operations for its role in protecting and monitoring some 1.5 million bats roosting in two areas – a nearby cave and a historic mine opening – as well as for conservation education outreach in the community.

PT Freeport-Indonesia’s Partnership Fund for Community Development (LPMAK) provides healthcare to residents of Mimika Regency in Papua, Indonesia, at the Mitra Masyarakat Hospital in Timika.
