How General Mills' Hometown Heroes Help Those Facing Hunger in Their Communities

The past few months, 25 Convenience and Foodservice employee teams at General Mills  have worked in groups to volunteer for their local Feeding America food bank, and surprise them with $5,000 grants from the General Mills Foundation. From the Food Bank of Iowa to Northwest Arkansas Food Bank, a total of $125,000 was provided across the country to help those facing hunger in General Mills’ hometown communities through the C&F Hometown Heroes program.

General Mills broke ground this week on the Maverick Creek Wind Project in Eden, Texas, in partnership with Kimberly-Clark, Renewable Energy Systems, Vestas, Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. and members of the local government. The global food industry has a key role to play in solving the problems of food insecurity and poor nutrition. In 2008, General Mills began looking at ways its specialized knowledge and experience could be harnessed and shared to aid the local food industry in Africa. A simple model was developed: a volunteer program for food technology professionals through which they can share their expertise with Africa’s most promising food entrepreneurs. Over the past decade, Partners in Food Solutions has grown to become a unique and dynamic organization that includes five other world-class food and agriculture companies (Cargill, DSM, Bühler, The Hershey Company, and Ardent Mills) and 1,600 corporate volunteers who have assisted and trained more than 1,500 early-stage food companies in Africa to improve food safety, packaging, processing, marketing, and more.

Imagine you sign up to serve your country at age 18. You go to boot camp and push your physical and mental limits to an extreme. You spend years on a ship. Maybe you serve in a war zone.
