In January 2015, Celeste Warren, vice president and chief diversity officer, suggested during a team meeting that we need to celebrate the diversity of our employees and provide them with time to pause, learn and reflect. Energized, the team realized that a day — or even a week — would not be impactful enough. Warren took in the perspectives of the team and said, “Let’s take the month,” and Global Diversity & Inclusion (GD&I) Experience Month was born.

For a lot of families, talking about health issues may not be something typically brought up at the dinner table—or a family reunion.
“There were reservations about talking about the family history,” says Ruby Holmes, senior specialist in clinical data management at Merck. “It’s one of those things that just didn’t get talked about a lot until something happened or someone was very sick.”
Holmes, a 68-year-old African American breast cancer survivor, says that when she was growing up, trips to the doctor ‘wasn’t something that was done on a regular basis.’

The rain that pounded the area in late July was the heaviest on record in the city. Some reports estimated the city saw nearly eight inches of rain in one hour.
Several employees at our regional office in Zhengzhou were forced to stay at the office overnight due to the massive power outages and traffic shutdowns caused by the floods.
But the torrent of rain didn’t stop them from joining rescue efforts — especially when it came to patients in need.

For the seventh year in a row, Merck has been recognized on the Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion list — and for the fourth straight year, Merck has received a score of 100% on the Disability Equality Index (DEI).
Merck recently announced the creation of the Kenneth C. Frazier Award for Maternal Health Equity, a grant award that will be bestowed annually to one organization in recognition of its commitment to and progress toward more equitable, high-quality maternal health care. The award will be granted by Merck for Mothers, Merck’s global initiative to help create a world where no woman has to die while giving life.

These goals are aligned with science and build on Merck’s long-standing focus on preventing the worst impacts of climate change and supporting the global effort to achieve the Paris Agreement goals by reducing demand for energy and minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
