Girls Inc. Receives Grant for STEM Projects

LOWELL — Girls Inc. of Greater Lowell received a $30,000 grant from the National Grid U.S. STEM Partnership to advance summer programs for young girls.

This is the fourth year the organization has received support from National Grid, according to Greater Lowell Girls Inc. Executive Director Tracy Ingersoll. “Very often, STEM careers are very lucrative careers,” Ingersoll said. And for young girls, “It’s not encouraged as much as it should be, I personally think,” she added.

This year, more than 4,500 National Grid employees pledged more than $1.4 million to the United Way campaign. When combined with the company’s contribution of $1.2 million, National Grid’s total pledges for the recently completed campaign came to more than $2.6 million, matching last year’s levels, which assist hundreds of United Way supported grassroots agencies.

When we released the Northeast 80x50 Pathway, our deep dive analysis into ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we hoped it would spark productive conversations about how our states, region, and country can combat climate change - one of the greatest threat of our time. 

While the scope of this enormous challenge can be hard to comprehend, I am confident that we have more solutions at hand than we recognize. Working together to realize those solutions is the only way forward.
