A museum honoring Peru’s national poet, Cesar Vallejo, opened its doors recently to visitors in the small town of Santiago de Chuco, marking the completion of what will become a major cultural attraction in the city where he was born and spent part of his life. The museum is the poet’s restored childhood home and exhibits his life and work.

H&M and the World Wildlife Fund have announced a three-year global partnership to innovate a new H&M corporate water strategy. The initiative will include conservation throughout the company’s whole supply chain as well as its manufacturing facilities. Under the plan, H&M designers and buyers will receive training in the water impacts of raw material production as well as wet processes for different styles, to promote more sustainable choices.

Barrick and CIDA Co-Fund new CARE Project in Peru

The international humanitarian organization CARE is leading a project to alleviate poverty and build government capacity in northern Peru. The project targets the districts of Quiruvilca, Usquil and Sanagorán, where poverty is endemic and the average monthly income is US$54. In these three districts, located near Barrick’s Lagunas Norte mine, subsistence farming is the primary means of survival.

Cerro Verde, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Receives National Award for Water Treatment Efforts

January 23, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Cerro Verde recently received a 2012 Sustainable Development Award by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy for its project to expand and improve the potable water system in Arequipa, Peru.

The site financed construction of the plant, which will double Arequipa’s water treatment capacity. At full capacity, it will make Arequipa the only city in the country capable of providing 100 percent of its population with potable water 24 hours a day.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Debuts Online Business Training Program for Women

Twenty women from the Copiapó Province in Chile inaugurated the test phase of a new online business academy for women in Chile and Peru. The academy was created through a partnership between Freeport-McMoRan and the Thunderbird School of Global Business Management.

The program is called DreamBuilder: The Women’s Business Creator. It is currently being piloted in communities surrounding the Company’s mining operations in South America; Cerro Verde in Peru, and Candelaria/ Ojos del Salado and El Abra in Chile.

Last week I had the honor to go to Lima, Peru, through Lilly's Connecting Hearts Abroad program (same program that sent me to India last year, where I taught English and math to young kids from the streets of Delhi). This time my role was to work with a talented film crew (two great guys) to document the journey. But this was SO much more than a business trip.

(3BL Media) Oakland, CA - August 3, 2012 - Fair Trade USA, the leading third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States, has announced the first two winners of its new Cooperative Small Grants Program, which offers Fair Trade Certified™ coffee cooperatives access to funding for specific capacity-building projects. The winners, APROCASSI from Peru and ASOPROKAN from Colombia, were awarded a combined $40,428 to improve crop productivity and quality management.
