Nowadays, sustainability is deeply related to business strategy and creating value, especially in the economic, social and environmental aspects that ensure mid- and long-term success. That’s quite a contrast to the much more short-term focus of corporate activities. Why Efficiency Alone isn't Good Enough

Summary:

As you know, the UN IPCC recently released a study that used its strongest language yet indicating human behavior is the leading cause of global warming. SAP CSO, Dr. Peter Graf, has put together his response to the news, asking why – given the worldwide interest in sustainability – are we not making more progress? He argues that businesses play a critical role to play here, and they need to pursue more than just environmental or resource efficiency. For long lasting change, companies must undergo a complete business model transformation. And those companies need people (from the boardroom to the shop floor) that are inspired to make and implement on a daily basis.

When SAP first began talking about the importance of sustainability to our business, some people – even inside our own company – were confused. What does SAP, one of the world’s leaders in enterprise software, have to do with sustainability? We are not a manufacturer, so we are not a big polluter and have a small carbon footprint compared to other large companies. We do not consume large amounts of natural resources such as timber or water. In fact, we operate in an industry that – for these reasons – has ignored sustainability challenges for a long time.
