At Albertsons Companies, we do a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure that we are providing responsibly sourced seafood products as part of our Responsible Seafood Program. Following our January 2018 announcement to remove eel from our sushi products, we immediately started working with our sushi vendors to discontinue the use of eel in sushi sold at our stores.
A wide consortium of global tuna buyers, NGOs, and fishing industry associations have issued a call to regional fishery management organizations that they adopt more stringent rules on harvest strategies, fish-aggregating devices, bycatch limits, catch monitoring and control, and surveillance.

BOISE, Idaho, May 4, 2017 /3BL Media/ — Albertsons Companies today announced that it has expanded its Fair Trade Certified™ seafood program and its commitment to responsible sourcing by becoming the first major grocer to carry Fair Trade Certified™ scallops.
We are proud to announce that as of year-end 2015, 77% of Safeway’s fresh and frozen seafood and 99% of private label frozen packaged seafood met our Responsible Sourcing Commitment. Since setting this ambitious goal in 2010, Safeway (including Carrs, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Vons, and Pavilions) has transitioned over 29 million pounds of seafood to environmentally responsible sources.
