Walden University Celebrates Ninth Annual Global Days of Service Volunteer Effort

2013 Scholar of Change: Bakali Mukasa

Walden University Ph.D. in Health Services student is working to help improve livelihoods and build hope for underprivileged children and families in rural communities of Uganda.

Born into an uneducated and improvised family with 18 siblings in a remote village in central Uganda, Bakali Mukasa's parents sturggled to sufficiently apply for the family's basic needs. As his siblings all dropped out of school, Bakali challenged himself to continue with education as he believed it was the pathway to a better future. At the age of 9, he walked five miles to and from farms to collect water on his head for sale to raise tuition.

Jeff Lubsen had wanted to be a psychologist since he was in the fifth grade but situations earlier in his life derailed his passion. When he again decided to proceed with this career path, he knew that his current career would be about making sure that mental healthcare and other healthcare providers are culturally competent and there is no significant disparity in the quality and accessibility of healthcare to minority populations, sexual minorities in particular.

Through funding provided by The Sam Bernstein Law Firm, Detroit PAL is able to expand the access of its programs to more youth in Detroit through the purchase of a 15-passenger van.
