Visitors and employees at Teck’s Vancouver office now have a secret weapon in the fight against germs and illness – copper.

To reduce the spread of germs and help keep employees healthy, Teck has installed copper-infused door handles and counter tops throughout its Vancouver office. Because of copper’s antimicrobial properties, these door handles and counter tops will continuously eliminate 99.9% of all bacteria that comes in contact with them, reducing the spread of germs throughout the Teck office.

Innovation at Work – New Blasting Practices to Protect Water Quality

As part of our commitment to improving water quality in BC’s Elk Valley region, a number of research projects are underway to prevent nitrate from entering the environment.

One source of nitrates is from explosives that interact with water during the blasting process. When this occurs nitrates can leach out of blastholes and enter the natural environment. To stop this from occurring plastic liners are used to prevent explosive materials from coming into contact with water.

Teck’s research into water quality management has reached a major breakthrough with the successful development of an in-situ method to remove selenium and nitrate from mine-impacted water.  The Saturated Rock Fill (SRF) facility built at Teck’s Elkview Operations can treat up to 10 million liters per day using naturally-occurring biological processes.
