In the early 1980s, Daniel Yankelovich, the master market researcher, gave a presentation to ad agency staff about coming demographic trends. His analysis came to the conclusion that the growing income gap would produce an increasingly angry underclass, a boiling cauldron that would one day explode. He showed us the future through demographics. I was hooked and subscribed to the magazine American Demographics. 

GE Supports Ruggie Framework Recently Endorsed by UN Human Rights Council

Summary: 

Several weeks before the UN Human Rights Council officially endorsed the "Respect, Protect, Remedy" Framework submitted by Harvard Professor John Ruggie, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative on Business and Human Rights, GE sent a letter in support of the Framework.  Earlier in the year, GE had been commended for implementing the Ruggie Framework, specifically by integrating the Framework concept of "human rights due diligence" into GE's official human rights policies.         

GE promotes respect for fundamental human rights, and views it as a key component of responsible corporate citizenship. GE has implemented a number of programs ranging from a human rights training video for business leaders to membership in the Global Business Initiative on Human Rights, to participation in the UN Global Compact Human Rights and Business Dilemmas Forum.

GE worked with the United Nations Global Compact and Maplecroft in developing the Human Rights and Business Dilemmas Forum, which provides case studies and discussion forums on human rights dilemmas that multinational corporations face globally, particularly in emerging markets. GE joined the Global Compact -- the largest responsible business coalition in the world based on 10 principles covering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues -- in December 2008.
