Whirlpool Corporation’s 2018 High School Innovation Challenge came to a conclusion on Friday, Dec. 14 when an employee panel awarded the final prizes to four teams of area high schoolers. The challenge began in September with 147 students on 31 teams from five area high schools and was narrowed down to 10 teams in November. Those 10 finalists displayed their innovative creations in a series of Idea Fair booths and alternated presenting them before the panel at the company’s Riverview Campus in Benton Harbor.
Because the majority of career returners are female (70% are women), this program has great potential to help increase gender diversity primarily at the senior analyst to senior manager levels. This is a clear talent pipeline challenge today. Another benefit of engaging the returning population, both male and female, is reconnecting with people who bring a fresh, consumer-focused perspective about our products.
As technology evolves rapidly, the gap in access to technology platforms and utilization rates among generations has been growing. Furthermore, interaction between the younger and older generations has been diminishing as a result of changing communication behavior among young adults.
