Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) is a Virginia based holding company for the Norfolk Southern Railway, a major Class I railroad system, formed in 1982 to control the Norfolk and Western Railway as well as the Southern Railway as well as various others. They were all merged in 1990 to form the NS.

Norfolk Southern Railway Company is primarily engaged in the rail transportation of raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods primarily in the Southeast, East, and Midwest and, via interchange with rail carriers, to and from the rest of the United States. It also transports overseas freight through several Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports. It provides logistics services and offers intermodal network in the eastern half of the United States.
