A recent UN Environment Programme release looks to specialty metals recycling as the key to a performance boom in the clean tech sector.  Maybe full cycle manufacturing and refining is the key to getting more performance out of our specialty metals.

According to UNEP, “Moving the global economy towards environmentally-friendly, clean technologies will increasingly hinge on rapid improvements in the recycling rates of so called "high-tech" specialty metals like lithium, neodymium and gallium.

Such metals,...

“Newsweek for sale”,  it's like hearing that a distant relative has a serious, potentially fatal illness, but is there a cure to be  found somewhere in the world of sustainable finance?  As a Newsweek reader for nearly  fifty years, I hope so, but it won't be easy.

Newsweek's editor Jon Meacham sees the magazine as one of the last “Catchers in the Rye”, saving people at cliff's edge by running serious stories on important topics.  A little self-important maybe, but Meacham is no phoney (just can't hold down that...

The suspense is killing me, and right now we've got both pyrotechnics and performance.  Financial regulatory reform is like a soap opera.  It pauses at what seems to be a near climax, inviting the viewer to tune in tomorrow.  When the viewer returns, the show unveils an array of new plot twists instead of an ending.

So far Republican foot dragging has been parried, methinks, with a strong Democratic message that saying x while doing negative x won't cut it when populist anti-...

At 2:28 PM on Thursday, May 5 the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 10,622; twenty minutes later it was 9977, a drop of 645 points, or slightly over 6%, in twenty minutes – a truly incredible performance, especially if you were short.    Real companies like Accenture and Exelon fell so hard they  were trading like penny stocks. In fact they were actually traded at a penny. It wasn't just the Dow component stocks, or the NYSE, all exchanges were effected. Hard to say exactly how much of the loss was due to the mystery...

Please take a moment to remember the eleven crew members lost in the original explosion of the Deepwater Horizon.........  Their stories should not be forgotten in the horrible, yet hypnotically photogenic, damage to wildlife and the environment that the spill has created.

I recognize that it is eminently possible to question the wisdom of all deep water drilling, or to ask why BP or Transocean or Haliburton or Cameron International didn't prevent this blowout or have a better arsenal of fixes at the ready.  In visiting the BP site to gather data for this post, I also recognize a company that is...

Apologies to the organizers, sponsors and speakers from the Better Business Bureau CSR Forum III – Good Business 2010 held on Tuesday, May 4,  but instead of  detailing your excellent performance, I'm writing mostly about my own shaky experience as a long-time blogger getting his first taste of real world reporting.  For those who want to skip the fun and stick to the news, just read the bold face type.  For the loyal few who are here only because they miss As Good As News, you are not allowed to skip the bold sections and...

The Corporate Library released preliminary CEO compensation numbers, including salary and performance based comp data from this year's proxy statements filed through March 25.  Median total annual CEO compensation fell 2.78%, down for the second straight year – the first two year drop since the survey began in 2002.  Total realized compensation fell by 7%, also down for the second straight year,  down to  the lowest since the survey began in 2002.  The realized compensation numbers reflect...

I was impressed when my son told me about Zipcar.  He needed a rental company that serves drivers under 25, but we both thought the business model – Zip is a car sharing organization that  uses public parking areas as it's rental lots – was promising.  Now come WhipCar and RelayRides with an idea that's a whole lot  more than just throwing up a capital letter in mid-word because they couldn't find the space bar.  These upstarts plan to run car rental companies using your cars, and mine.

The new kids on the car rental block plan to function as exchanges, connecting owners willing to rent a car that'...

Jay Leno reclaims his throne.  Conan quits in a snit, then resurrects himself on TBS, a network trying to resurrect itself.  George Lopez slides aside, glad to keep his gig. Dave, Jimmy and Craig soldier on as Wanda grabs a niche, and so the late night comedy players – a recurring soap opera - seem to have completed their latest episode.  Who cares?  The networks care, a lot.  Late night can be a cash machine.  The comedian hosts are cheap, until they get established.  Production is cheap – Two cameras, a couch, a few chairs and a desk that doesn't even have drawers.  Writers (sadly) are always...
