Next to burning coal, oil, and other fossil fuels, nothing contributes more to climate change than deforestation. Recently Brian Kahn of Justmeans reminded us natural forests composed of native trees and other vegetation are one of the planet’s best defenses against the effects of climate change. While much deforestation occurs in developing countries, it turns out the market drivers of forest destruction often originate in wealthier nations like the United States—and that consumers can impact the fate of the world’s forests by demanding responsible...

A few days ago I wrote about the efforts of Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) to eliminate Environmental Protection Agency authority to regulate carbon dioxide—the most important of the causes of climate change. If codified into law, Murkowski’s resolution would make it largely impossible for the United States to respond to the threat of climate change. The push for the Murkowski resolution has been months in the making, with a group of Republicans and key conservative Democrats backing the attempt to undermine...

No battle will define the US response to climate change more than how this country deals with its fleet of aging, dirty coal plants. Coal plants, responsible for generating about half the electricity used in the United States, are the single largest contributor to climate change. That nation’s current fleet of approximately 600 coal plants produces nearly 30% of total US carbon emissions. To have an impact, any US strategy to combat the effects of climate change must include a plan to replace these plants with cleaner energy sources.

Decommissioning the fleet of...

Just call them Murkowski’s Mafia. This Thursday Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), backed by a cadre of Republicans and conservative Democrats in the Senate, will introduce a Resolution of Disapproval which if passed would curtail US ability to combat climate change. Known to many as the “Dirty Air Act,” Murkowski’s resolution would veto the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases as harmful pollutants under the Clean Air Act.

It’s being introduced at a time when the effects of climate change and US dependence on fossil fuels are being felt...

After months of near-silence regarding any commitment to pass a climate bill this year, President Obama has begun talking about clean energy again lately. Perhaps most notable is a speech the president made Wednesday at Carnegie Mellon University, in which Obama pledged to round up enough support to push a clean energy and climate bill through the US Senate and address the root causes of climate change.

The president’s new strategy for passing a climate bill seems to include avoiding the term “climate change” itself, and capitalizing on public anger at oil companies and the fossil fuel industries. If it works, this approach could prove to be our best...

The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill is now the largest in US history, and has dramatically focused the attention of millions of Americans on the costs of our addiction to fossil fuels. Many commentators have already pointed out that BP’s oil spill is just a symptom of a much larger problem with oil, the starkest manifestation of which is climate change. While devastating on a regional scale, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico can’t match the potential of climate change to influence life on every corner of the planet.

The obvious solution is to...

It feels great to be writing my first post for Justmeans.  As someone who has previously written about climate and environmental issues for numerous web sites and blogs, I'm glad to be able to get the word out through a site like this one.  What I can say from my experience with Justmeans so far, is the people behind this web site know how to reach a wide audience and how to connect readers to information that will help them do good work.  I'm glad to be joining the Justmeans team to write about climate change.

With the planet nearing dangerous climate "tipping points"...
