The US Department of Labor has honored the Firestone Agricultural Workers Union of Liberia (FAWUL) with the Iqbal Masih Award in recognition of the labor union's efforts to stop child labor at the Firestone rubber plantation in Liberia.  The award, named for a Pakistani carpet factory worker who spoke out against child labor, was presented to FAWUL on February 16, 2011 by U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

Waitrose supermarket announced in late February that it plans to stock a new brand of condoms made from ethically sourced rubber latex.  The condoms, produced by the ethical product company FairSquared, will be available at Waitrose stores in the UK on April 4, 2011.

Pressure from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has caused a major tea company to turn a new leaf.  Tea products produced by parent company Unilever, including Lipton and PG brands, will no longer be tested on animals, the company announced in late January 2011.

The controversy over the shark fin market is nothing new, but recent California legislation, introduced February 2011, is bringing it to the surface again.  If passed, it will be illegal to possess, sell, trade or distribute shark fins except for educational purposes in the state of California.  This bill is being backed by organizations such as Monterey Bay Aquarium and Shark Savers, who argue that the fishing methods used for obtaining shark fins are unethical and environmentally dangerous.

The Marriott International hotel chain is taking their commitment to environmentalism into the kitchen with a new program aimed at bringing more sustainable seafood to guests' plates.  Marriott has partnered with CleanFish Alliance to create the “Future Fish” program, a policy that asks all Marriott hotel restaurants to ensure at least 50% of the seafood it purchases is sustainable.
