In 100 days the American Cancer Society will mark its 100thbirthday. I’ve been fortunate to be involved with the American Cancer Society for more than four decades, and I’m especially pleased to serve as its volunteer president during this milestone year. It is my privilege to start counting down to our centennial by looking back at what has been achieved, and looking ahead to the time when we will finish the fight.

January 18, 2013 /3BL Media/ - As of 2009, the overall death rate for cancer in the United States had declined 20 percent from its peak in 1991, translating to the avoidance of approximately 1.2 million deaths from cancer, 152,900 of these in 2009 alone. These figures come from the American Cancer Society’s annual Cancer Statistics report, one of the most widely-cited medical publications in the world.

Freeman Patient Navigation Institute (PNI) today announced that Accenture and the Accenture Foundations have awarded PNI $750,000 to help the organization roll out a Patient Navigator selection, skills-building and job readiness program in 35 locations across the United States. The grant builds on a 2011 donation of cash and in-kind support of $875,000, which supported PNI’s successful pilot program in Cleveland and helped fund the training of 120 patient navigators in the city.
