It’s no secret that going green is all the rage these days.  In fact, being eco-friendly is more popular and well accepted now than ever before in history. Over the past few decades, particularly in business, the exploration of sustainability concepts has traditionally been a reaction to undesirable outcomes rather than a positive pursuit of business sustainability value.   The headlines have tended to focus on the negative impacts on society and the environment.  However, positive signs in the market and growing efforts to explore mutual value creation may just transform the sustainability perspective.

Bringing people together for meetings, often for multiple days at a time, can create a "host" of environmental impacts—from the smog and greenhouse gas emissions associated with air and ground travel to the paper, plastic, and food waste associated with feeding attendees.  In fact, Marriott Hotels, estimates that the average three-day meeting attended by 1,000 people produces more than 12 tons of trash, uses 200,000 kilowatts of power and consumes 100,000 gallons of water.

Astronauts, Efficiency and Apollo 13

Blog

I know that some people don’t think that energy efficiency is very compelling, but there are a lot of astronauts who would disagree with that. In space, energy efficiency literally saves lives. When Apollo 13 lost electrical power, the astronauts’ survival came down to their ability to conserve enough energy to bring them back to Earth. After shutting down all “unnecessary” systems, how much power do you think they had? The equivalent of what it takes to run a coffee pot. Amazing.
