Hispanics are one of the largest, fastest growing and youngest minority populations in the United States. However, Hispanics are also one of the most underrepresented minority groups when looking at STEM careers and education. According to the US Department of Education, “less than 2 percent of the STEM workforce is Hispanic while almost 20 percent of the country’s youth population is Hispanic”. Additionally, at school they are performing lower in STEM subjects and often are not receiving adequate exposure to the topic in K-12 classes.

September happens to be a unique month for Latinos. The 15th marks the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence in September, the 16th and the 18th respectively. It’s of no surprise why September 15th kicks off National Hispanic Heritage Month.

This was my second time attending the event, and I wanted to bring some of my team from our area restaurants so they could see the real-life impact that HSF is having on individuals and families across the country. I also wanted them to see how Darden is supporting this work through scholarships that will enable students to pursue their academic and professional goals.
