(3BLMedia/theCSRfeed) ATLANTA - November 18, 2010 - The Home Depot® Foundation today announced the winners of its sixth annual Awards of Excellence for Affordable Housing Built Responsibly.  Lopez Community Land Trust in Lopez Island, Washington, was selected as the winner in the homeownership category, and First Community Housing, San Jose, California, was selected as the winner in the rental category.  Each winning organization will receive a $75,000 grant and each runner up will received a $25,000 grant to further their goal of producing efficient, healthy and affordable housing.

Funds Used to Expand ToolBank to Baltimore, Charlotte and Denver

ToolBank USA, the organization behind a national movement to equip volunteers with tools to revitalize communities and transform lives, today announced an investment by The Home Depot Foundation in support of its expansion plan. The $200,000 grant will spur expansion markets for the ToolBank movement, with new ToolBanks slated to open in Charlotte, Baltimore and Denver. Each ToolBank will create and maintain an inventory of tools, such as rakes, shovels, saws, power drills, ladders and more, that is loaned exclusively to charitable organizations to increase the impact of their community work.

I just returned from the absolute best Habitat build - ever.  Without exaggeration, I’ve probably visited over 100 houses built by Habitat for Humanity and been to dozens of build events.  I’ve never left one feeling disappointed; never felt like my time wasn’t very well spent; could always see the tangible impact of the volunteers’ efforts.  But the one I participated in last week truly stands apart.
