Our approach to sustainability reaches beyond our organization and our efforts impact many lives and places. We titled our 2012 sustainability report “Conversations About Sustainability” to reflect our commitment to meaningful stakeholder engagement. We believe that sustainability, like a good conversation, evolves to meet the needs and concerns of all involved.
Danny Raymond says his love for fishing and the outdoors started in the womb. He’s sure he was born with a rod and reel in his hand. Raymond, a log truck driver for Weyerhaeuser’s Western Timberlands business, and his wife Karen, who provides administrative support at the Eugene, Ore., office, share a passion for advocating and educating their community on the conservation of fishery resources.
Conservationists must find common ground with farmers, if they are to achieve their goals of stemming biodiversity loss, says Braulio Dias, the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
“In the past we have given most of our attention to the traditional conservation strategy of protected areas. But that won’t work on its own. More and more, we at the Convention are highlighting biodiversity as part of the solution to agricultural problems, rather than an impediment to economic development.”

But what if that same company sought to transform an industry by making energy efficiency the centerpiece of its differentiation strategy?
GM’s Lordstown Stamping plant is the first and largest North American GM facility to convert all of its lighting to high-efficiency LED bulbs. The switch will save the plant more than $800,000 overall annually, while reducing CO2 emissions by more than 8,500 tons. This is equivalent to annual energy use of 397 homes.
