Tetra Pak 'Making Steady Progress' Towards Recycling Target

Tetra Pak needs to double recycling rates in order to hit a target of 40% of used beverage cartons being fully recycled by 2020, according to the packaging giant's latest sustainability report.

The report also explains that Tetra Pak will need to triple the number of recycled cartons, to about 100 billion a year, by the end of the decade.

However, environmental impact is affected not just by the amount of energy, but also by the type of energy consumed. On average, US pulp and paper mills derive nearly two-thirds of energy needs from renewable sources that are considered carbon neutral. Sappi’s mills derive over 80 percent of their energy from renewable resources.

Global investment in renewable energy fell 11 percent in 2013 to $254 billion, according to data released by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), casting a shadow over the notion of a “clean trillion.”
