When Travel Channel’s Hotel Impossible team decided to take on an east coast hotel impacted by Hurricane Sandy a year ago, it was very personal. Hotel Impossible host Anthony Melchiorri’s Belle Harbor, Queens, neighborhood was one of the areas hardest hit. The neighborhood was home to many first responders who were out heroically helping others, while raging waters and fires were destroying their own homes.

Sounds of people laughing, telling stories and talking about their weekend plans filled the classrooms and halls of Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School for the first time in five months.

It will be another five months at least before the students can come back to the school because of the extensive damage superstorm Sandy caused there.

But about 150 volunteers spent most of Thursday breathing life back in the school to give the students a happier return in the fall for the next school year.

Workers from Verizon will be volunteering at the Hugh J Boyd School in Seaside Heights [on Thursday, March 28].

As the Jersey Shore continues to rebuild following Hurricane Sandy, nearly 200 workers from Verizon will donate time today to help work on repairs at the Hugh J Boyd School.
