"School means success," says Paul, a 54-year-old cocoa farmer from the town of D. in southern Côte d’Ivoire. "I want my children to be successful and so I send them to school."

Doing so has not always been easy for Paul. He has 11 children now. Bringing up such a large family would put a strain on any family’s resources. Yet putting his children through school remains a priority for him. This is because he is literate himself, and he values the opportunities that education can offer his children in the long term.

Deep in Côte d’Ivoire's cocoa belt, the small village of T. lies quiet during the day. With all the men and women in the fields, the 300 or so mudbrick houses mostly stand empty.

Some of the children go to the local school. To reach it, they walk along the village’s heavily potholed, unsurfaced roads. The few cars that do pass through have to slow down to a crawl.

I’ve headed up the Nestlé Cocoa Plan for almost 12 years, so I’ve seen firsthand how our Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation System, (CLMRS), works and how it has benefited kids and families in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. As demonstrated in our 2019 report ‘Tackling Child Labor’, it is making a real difference to the lives of thousands of kids and families.

Our system was successful in tackling child labor in just over half of cases in the 2019 reporting period. Strong progress, but now we’re going further.
