How many times have you rolled out of bed in the morning and said to yourself…you know what, today I’m going to eat incredibly healthy – I’ll do the no-fat, low-cal, no-sodium, only-clean, raw-food, all-protein, no-wine, cleanse-thing.
And then 9 AM hits. You walk into your office and right there, starting back at you, are the most gorgeous-looking doughnuts. They look so delicious that it’d be a crime to say no. So you eat a quarter, then a half, and then say forget it…I’m goin’ in. Next thing you know you’re covered in powdered sugar and a half box of doughnuts is gone.

The contributors of The Square Deal asked Dennis Hecker, Wendy’s® Senior Vice President of Quality Assurance, to blog about our standards in food safety and bring to light some of the challenges and opportunities we deal with every day in order to bring fresh food to our customers. Dennis worked right alongside Dave Thomas and developed many food safety procedures and animal welfare practices that went on to become industry standards. Fun fact, Dennis is one of the few Wendy’s Company employees honored in the Wendy’s Hall of Fame – a distinction typically awarded to our franchisees. He was inducted for creating a “Best in Class” Quality Assurance program making Wendy’s an industry leader in proactive food safety initiatives and high quality standards. He’s also been to 11 Rolling Stone concerts in his life. Thanks, Dennis, for sharing a bit of your world on our blog.

When I posted my first blog back in May, I provided some insight and set some context about our journey as a responsible steward of energy use within our restaurants. At Wendy’s, we understand that energy conservation in our industry is a big responsibility. It’s a long-term commitment and full of complex (and often expensive) changes that aren’t going to happen overnight. I’m lucky to work with a first class energy team that’s fast at work to improve energy efficiency at Wendy’s.
Editor’s Note: In August, we held our first-ever Top General Manager (GM) conference at our Restaurant Support Center in Dublin, Ohio which (as the name suggests) served to honor our top 200 GMs from across company and franchisee restaurants.
In the following guest blog, Chief People Officer Scott Weisberg reflects on the three-day celebration and shares a little insight into how much we value the role of the GM.

Editor’s Note: We are excited welcome our latest guest blogger, Olympian Meghan O’Leary, to The Square Deal. As you’ll read below, Meghan’s story is particularly inspiring. Her inner strength, relentless drive, and willingness to take on new challenges, are traits that that made her our 2002 Wendy’s High School Heisman female winner and brought her to Rio this past summer to compete on the US women’s double sculls rowing team with Ellen Tomek. Meghan and Ellen faced grueling race conditions in Rio and battled back from a repechage in order to place sixth in the entire world, and in doing so, they brought so much joy and pride to the Wendy’s Family.
