Canada’s extractive companies are an outsized global business sector of activity. More than 100 Canadian companies are at work on more than 8,000 properties around the world, making up almost half of all mining and mineral exploration efforts. With this large global footprint, an environmentally messy industry with a checkered ethical history has attracted increasing international scrutiny.  Groups such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and Transparency International are looking at inadequate Canadian CSR practices.
