AUSTIN, Texas, October 2, 2017 /3BL Media/ - With its 2017 Growing Healthy Kids Campaign, Whole Kids Foundation aims to raise $3 million to fund programs that give schoolchildren in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. better access to fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as educational opportunities to learn about where their food comes from. The foundation’s goal would allow it to grant 200 school salad bars and 500 school gardens, as well as fund their healthy teachers program and honey beehive grant program this year.

One rainy day last fall, Anneliese Tanner scrolled through photos of sweet potatoes on her phone.

The managers at some of the 114 school cafeterias under her watch in the Austin Independent School District were posting photos of the vegetables as their cooks made baked sweet potatoes for the first time. All morning long, Tanner kept an eye on how everyone was reacting to the change.

“They have a lot of pride in their work,” she says. “They like to show off their kolaches and parfaits, especially.”

Kids in Austin today are enjoying an entirely different school-lunch experience. Thanks to the strategic vision of Austin Independent School District (AISD) and the financial and moral support of nonprofit Whole Kids Foundation, lunch in the cafeteria is evolving to be more nutritious, more locally sourced and far more hip than what most of us remember.
