Emotional Problem Can Lead to Obesity and Serious Health Issues

| Monday 5th October 2009
serious-health-issuesChildren in Europe and North America are facing serious health problems due to obesity. As if the frequent consumption of fast food was not enough, recent studies show that emotional problems during childhood can also result in adult obesity. Experts believe that apart from lack of exercise and unplanned diet, factors like low self esteem, lack of self control and getting overly worried at a young age can also play a significant role in causing adult obesity. Girls as compared to boys have stronger chances of facing such problems.

Physical health of kids suffering from emotional difficulties can be improved for a long term with early intervention by the family. Parents have been advised to keep a check on how much food their child is consuming in his or her developing years as this can be directly linked to their mental health. It has been proved that people who remain stressed tend to overeat. With time the connection between food and emotions becomes firm and disordered eating results in obesity.

Such findings are of great importance in western countries where child obesity is set to turn into an epidemic. Obesity is a major health issue in the United States and the number seems to be rising at a fast pace. With the lack of home cooked healthy food and outdoor activities, child obesity rate in the US is growing at an alarming rate. Families will have to adapt few changes in their daily activities in order to ensure a healthy lifestyle for kids. Promotional strategies related to emotional and social aspects of learning need to be encouraged to eliminate the root cause of adult obesity. Doctors believe that kids can be resistant to treatments therefore it is the responsibility of parents as well as teachers to spot these issues in them and work towards combating adult obesity.
