Socially Responsible Campaign Targets African Children With Type 1 Diabetes

cdic-dialogue-postersNovo Nordisk, a pharmaceutical company whose main focus is on diabetes care, has launched in Africa the Changing Diabetes in Children Dialogue Posters as an educational tool to foster a dialogue between healthcare providers and the families of children with type 1 diabetes. The launch took place in the framework of the 1st Africa Diabetes Congress held in Tanzania July 25 - 28.

The Dialogue Posters are available in English and French, and are in the process of being translated into Swahili (for East Africa) and Amharic (for Ethiopia). The materials have been made accessible to the countries currently implementing the Changing Diabetes in Children program. These include Bangladesh, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, India, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

“The aim of the Changing Diabetes in Children program is to improve the lives of children with type 1 diabetes. When they are able to maintain a healthy life and their care givers are able to show them how, we are succeeding,” said Soraya Ramoul, director, access to health, Novo Nordisk’s director of its access to health department.

Type 1 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes in children worldwide, making up 90 to 95 per cent of diabetes cases in under-16s. It is caused by the pancreas’ inability to produce insulin as the cells that produce insulin are destroyed. In the last 30 years, there has been a threefold increase in diabetes cases among children. In Africa, children with this type of diabetes often go undiagnosed and when they are, access to insulin and medical equipment is not sufficient.

Besides the posters, Novo Nordisk has put together handouts to help children understand and explain diabetes to those around them, guidelines for nurses with information on how to use the materials and posters to be placed in clinics with basic information on diabetes.
